Tablets & Capsules

While you speak calmly and gently to your schnauzer, hold its muzzle with your non dominant hand and elevate its head to about 45 degrees. With your dominant hand, use your finger to open the jaw by pushing down on the central teeth.

Place the tablet or capsule over the back of the tongue, as far as you can. Remove your fingers, close the dog's mouth, and stroke its neck or rub its nose vigorously. In some instances, some pills and capsules can be hidden in a small amount of the dog's favorite food.

Alternately, the contents of some capsules may be mixed with food; this technique is not appropriate with medications that have a bad taste.

Liquid Medications

Tip your schnauzer's head back slighty with your non dominant hand. With the third finger of your dominant hand, open the jaw by pushing down on the lower central teeth. Using a plastic eyedropper or metal spoon, place the required amount of liquid medication over the back of the tongue or into the dog's cheek.

Close the mouth, and rub your pet's nose pad vigororously; this last maneuver will induce the dog to swllow and lick its nose. Before you release your schnauzer, praise it lavishly for its fine cooperation.
