Unless your schnauzer lives with a cat whose ears are infested with ear mites, or has access to wilderness areas where ear ticks abound, it is unlikely to suffer from these highly selective parasites.
The signs of ear mite or tick infestation are pawing at the ear, head shaking and the presence of a dark, semi dry often profuse discharge within the ear canal.
Treatment for ear mite infestation is thorough cleasing of the ear canals followed by the instillation of an ointment or aqueous solution that will eradicate any mites or their eggs.
Ear ticks are physically removed with forceps inserted through an illuminated ear speculum and otoscope. Once the adult ticks are removed, ear mite medication is placed into the ear canals to destroy any eggs or larval ticks.
